 Chair — Rod Dewar

Rod Dewar is president and chief executive officer of Island Savings Credit Union, a $1.7 billion banking and insurance business with 400 employees, 57,000 members/customers, and 13 branch locations. He was formerly the senior vice president and chief operating officer for the British Columbia Automobile Association (BCAA). Prior to BCAA, he ended a 30-year career at Canadian Airlines International as vice president, Airports North America.

Mr. Dewar has served on various boards, including Calm Air International, the Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce, the Canadian Cancer Society (Manitoba), and the Canadian Professional Sales Association. He currently serves as a member of the Human Resources and Conduct Review committees on the board of directors for Credential Securities, a national $9 billion wealth management products provider. He is also on the board of directors for the BC Ferry Authority. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2007.

Vice Chair — Lance Abercrombie

Lance Abercrombie is a partner with Abercrombie & Associates Chartered Accountants, responsible for overseeing the quality of their service and advice. Prior to this, he was a senior manager at KPMG Victoria for seven years responsible for the management of audit, review and tax engagement services to Canadian private companies and Canadian and American public companies. Previously he was with Ernst & Young in Vancouver, where he managed audit, accounting and tax services to private and public companies. He was born and raised in Victoria, and has a bachelor of commerce from the University of Victoria.

Mr. Abercrombie is vice chair on the Board of Advisors to the Faculty of Business, University of Victoria, and past treasurer of the Victoria Arthritis Society. He became a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member in 2007.

Secretary — Alan Lowe

Alan Lowe is principal of Alan Lowe Architect Inc. A former mayor of Victoria, twice re-elected, he was the youngest person to hold this position when first elected in 1999 and was Victoria's longest-serving mayor. In 2007, he formed the mayor's task force on breaking the cycle of homelessness, drug addiction, and mental illness, which became the blueprint for the City of Victoria's 10-year plan to end homelessness and led to the formation of the Coalition to End Homelessness.

Mr. Lowe is currently the chair of the Greater Victoria Spirit Committee. He is a recipient of the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal and in 2006 was named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Chinese Canadians. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2009.

Treasurer — Dwane Ford

Dwane Ford is vice president and branch manager with RBC Dominion Securities. He has worked with RBC since 1997 as an investment advisor, assistant manager and manager, and in 2006 and 2008 won Branch of the Year. Prior to joining RBC, Mr. Ford worked in the broadcasting industry. He is married with three young children.

His volunteer experience includes involvement with the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) Finance Committee, University of Victoria mentor program, United Way, Help-Fill-a-Dream Foundation, and Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as coaching soccer and baseball. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2009.

Rick Anthony

Rick Anthony is a detective in the Investigative Services Division for the Victoria Police Department. Currently assigned to the Financial Crimes and Fraud Section, he works closely with agencies such as Canadian Border Services and the RCMP. He also performs various media and public relations duties for the Victoria Police Bureau of Support Services – Public Affairs and Media Relations. From 2001 to 2002, he was the commander of the United Nations Police Helicopter Unit in Kosovo.

Mr. Anthony is the recipient of two Chief's Commendations for excellence in the performance of his duties. In 1995 he also received a Medal of Bravery for rescuing two men from a smoke-filled burning house. He is a member of the board for Restorative Justice Victoria and the Victoria Better Business Bureau. His past community involvement includes the Saanich Traffic Advisory Committee, the Cops for Cancer Committee, and the Law Enforcement Torch Run Committee. He has been a member of the steering committee for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation's Visions gala since 2002. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2010.

Manjit Bains

Manjit Bains is vice president, corporate relations and corporate secretary to the board, Consumer Protection BC. She is responsible for the organization's media and stakeholder relations, marketing plans, and brand development. Ms. Bains works closely with the government on issues of consumer policy, legislation, and business development. She also supports the board of Consumer Protection BC in areas of governance policy and procedure, board recruitment and evaluation, administration of conflict of interest guidelines, and support to board committee chairs. Prior to her work with Consumer Protection BC, she held senior positions in the Ministry of Attorney General and the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.

Ms. Bains is a certified management accountant. Her volunteer experience includes involvement with the United Way, Run for the Cure, and various parent advisory councils. She has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2010.

Kim Hesketh

Kim Hesketh worked in the broadcasting industry for thirty-seven years. In January 2010, he retired as vice president and general manager for Rogers Broadcasting in Victoria.

Mr. Hesketh, who has lived in Victoria since 1979, is very active in the community. He is the president of the Galiano Ensemble Society and is also a director of the board of the Victoria Coats for Kids Association, an organization he helped establish fifteen years ago. His past community involvement includes board positions with the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, the Better Business Bureau of Vancouver Island, BC Legislative Press Gallery, BC Association of Broadcasters, Island Open Golf Society, Camosun College Foundation, Camosun College Board of Governors, BC Children's Hospital Foundation, and the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2010.

Gordon Macatee

Gordon Macatee is head of the British Columbia Ferry Commission. Mr. Macatee served as BC's deputy minister of Health Services from 2006 to 2009. He is a seasoned public sector leader with broad experience at the executive level of government, including deputy minister level appointments in labour, management services, real estate management, environment, fisheries, agriculture, and export development. After leaving the government, he worked as an executive with the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games (VANOC), and now operates an independent management consulting business in Victoria. Mr. Macatee has been a member of various boards, including the Canadian Institute for Health Information, the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and Land and Water Inc. British Columbia. He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2010.

John Madden

John Madden, new to our board in 2011, is Vice President Human Resources at the BC Assessment Authority (BCA).

Prior to joining BC Assessment John held senior human resource positions at TransLink and the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. He began his career in the airline industry, where he worked at Canadian Airlines for nearly 20 years in both Vancouver and Calgary. John has also been a Board member at Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities in Langley, an agency that provides therapeutic equine services to the disabled. Prior to moving to Victoria John was also a volunteer at GF Strong, a lower mainland health facility providing rehabilitation services to spinal cord and brain injured clients.

Joe Murphy

Joe Murphy is vice president, operations and support services for the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA). He joined the Greater Victoria Hospital Society in 1987 as director of pharmacy services, and has since managed many roles within the Capital Health Region, including vice president of finance and operations support. He has held cross appointments at the College of Pharmacy, University of Saskatchewan, as assistant clinical professor and instructor.

Mr. Murphy also serves on boards for the Greater Victoria United Way, HealthPro, and Oak Bay Lodge (chair). He joined the Victoria Hospitals Foundation board in 2006 as its VIHA designate.

Cathy Whitehead McIntyre

Cathy Whitehead McIntyre, new to our board in 2011, is principal and founder of Strategic Initiatives Inc., a nationally recognized Victoria-based market research firm founded in 1997 which counts among its clients many of the leading businesses in Western Canada, a host of well-recognized local companies, and many not-for-profit organizations. Cathy has worked in the not-for-profit sector, public sector, business-to-business, and business-to-consumer environments. She has significant experience in opportunity assessment, positioning, branding, marketing, advertising and communications, customer satisfaction and new product development. Cathy currently sits on the Senate of the University of Victoria. She is a former Director of a number of not-for-profit organizations, including the Certified Management Accountants Society of BC, the United Way of Canada (where she recently chaired that organization’s National Brand Strategy Task Force), the United Way of Greater Victoria (where she was Board Chair in 2003), and the University of Victoria Alumni Association (where she chaired the Board from 2000 to 2003).

Dorothy “Sam” Williams

Dr. Dorothy "Sam" Williams is vice-chief of Geriatric Medicine for the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA), chief of staff for the VIHA South Island region, and acting chief of staff for Vancouver Island. She is a full-time clinician in geriatrics, a clinical instructor with the Department of Internal Medicine at UBC, a past president of the Medical Staff Association for South Island, and a member of the provincial Physician Health Program’s “Physicians Advocating Wellness” groups. She is the chair for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation’s 2011 Visions gala.

Dr. Williams joined our board as a medical staff representative for VIHA after being nominated for the role by VIHA's Chief Medical Officer. She has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2009.

John Williams

John Williams recently retired after a 47-year career in the hotel business, most recently as executive vice president of operations for Fairmont Raffles Hotels based in London, England, and Toronto. Prior to that, he was regional vice president for Fairmont hotels in the U.S. and Mexico regions, and general manager of hotels including the Pan Pacific, Vancouver; the St. Regis, New York; and the Empress, Victoria.

Mr. Williams is the chairman of the board for the Royal British Columbia Museum. Other board involvement includes Tourism British Columbia (chair), Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce, London (director), and the Vancouver Board of Trade (director). He has been a Victoria Hospitals Foundation board member since 2009.
