This fall, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation is fundraising for Heart Health and General Surgery in the new Patient Care Centre at Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH). Our goal is to raise $595,000 for 94 specialized vital signs monitors ― sophisticated medical equipment that collects and displays key patient information, such as blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, blood oxygen saturation, and temperature, as well as an electrocardiogram, a wave-form graphic of a patient’s heartbeat.
Portable vital signs monitors used to be shared between rooms as they became available, with a central monitor located at the nursing care hub. Now installed in every patient room in the Heart Health and General Surgery units, the new monitors enable caregivers to make immediate medical assessments right at their patients’ bedsides, without having to leave the room.
“I can speak with my patients while I am viewing their vital signs, adjust temporary pacemaker settings while watching their heart rate and blood pressure, or administer medication then see the response to treatment. No more running back and forth to the nursing care hub to see the vital signs displays when a monitor isn’t available!”
— Dr. Daniel Wong, Medical Director, Heart Health, Vancouver Island Health Authority
The new monitors are also connected through a wireless network to the hands-free communications devices worn by caregivers. The devices can alert caregivers immediately when a patient’s vital signs change.
