Victoria Hospitals Foundation announces new board chair

October 12, 2011

Victoria, BC — The Victoria Hospitals Foundation today announced today its board of directors for the 2011-2012 term includes two new members as well as a new board chair.John Madden (BC Assessment Authority) and Cathy Whitehead McIntyre (Strategic Initiatives Inc.) begin their three-year terms immediately. Rod Dewar, former vice chair who has served on the board of directors since 2007 now begins his first term as board chair. Starr McMichael, board chair from 2009 – 2011, will go on to serve as board chair for American Friends of the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

Victoria Hospitals Foundation continues fundraising for Neurosurgery

August 23, 2011

Victoria, BC — The Victoria Hospitals Foundation is continuing its fundraising efforts for Neurosurgery at Victoria General Hospital (VGH). As a result of the recent postal strike less than half of the $361,000 needed to purchase the equipment has been raised. The Foundation's campaign will fund a new and urgently needed neuronavigation system.

A book entitled – Fuse - featuring visual art, photography and creative writing by people living with mental illness is now available for public purchase, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation announced today. Compiled by the Foundation, and local writer/professor Melanie Siebert in support of the Courtnall Celebrity Classic, Fuse showcases local writers and artists as a way raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental illness.

Victoria Hospitals Foundation launches 2011 Spring Campaign in support of Neurosurgery

On May 18, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation launched its 2011 Spring Campaign to raise funds towards the purchase of a new $361,000 neuronavigation system for Victoria General Hospital to assist with delicate surgeries of the nervous system. The equipment helps neurosurgeons create a 3D map of a patient’s brain or spine, allowing them to focus on the exact location they need to reach during an operation.

Canadian Tire Fix-a-Heart campaign raises $60,000 for Heart Health

Shoppers in Greater Victoria gave generously to the annual Fix-A-Heart campaign at local Canadian Tire Stores during the 2010 Christmas season, and raised $60,000 for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

Victoria Hospitals Foundation's Visions gala Raises $441,205 for Smart Beds

 

November 21, 2010

The community contributed a record amount of money to health care in Victoria last night, raising $441,205 at the 20th Anniversary Visions gala. The sold-out, 300-person, black-tie event held at the Fairmont Empress raised funds through ticket sales, live and silent auctions, a bear raffle, cash gifts, and in-kind sponsorship.

On October 21, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation launched its 2010 Fall Campaign to raise $715,000 to purchase 65 Smart Beds for the new Patient Care Centre at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Victoria Hospitals Foundation Board Chair, Starr McMichael, was joined by Dr. Marilyn Bater, Medical Director, Seniors Health and Department Head, Geriatrics, Vancouver Island Health Authority, and Robyne Maxwell, RN BSN, Director, Equipment, People and Clinical Services to announce the new fundraising campaign and explain the importance of the new Smart Beds. These sophisticated patient beds are designed with advanced technology to enable quality care and better patient outcomes.

Victoria Hospitals Foundation to rake in funds through the Shoppers Drug Mart Tree of Life Campaign

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation and Shoppers Drug Mart are partnering in an effort to raise funds to advance women's whole health in Victoria through the ninth annual Tree of Life campaign. The four-week fundraising campaign, running from September 18th through October 15th at over 1,180 Shoppers Drug Mart Stores, will harvest essential funding to support breast health care at Victoria General Hospital.

Albert Head Air Cadets raise more than $7,300

August 25, 2010

As part of the Albert Head Air Cadets summer training, cadets learn to give back to their community through fundraising. Since 2002, the cadets have chosen the Victoria Hospitals Foundation as their charity of choice. This summer, cadets and staff who attended the training centre raised $7,386.15 towards pediatric equipment for the Victoria General and Royal Jubilee Hospitals - almost double their original goal of $4,000 to purchase a specialized pediatric syringe pump, a piece of equipment that administers precise amounts of medication to infants and small children. Fundraising initiatives included a cadet dance, ironing services, and the popular "Ice Cream Palace". Many thanks to everyone who participated and contributed!

Victoria Hospitals Foundation announces 2010 Spring Campaign

On May 12, the Victoria Hospitals Foundation launched its 2010 Spring Campaign to raise funds towards the purchase of a $396,000 hematology cell counter for Laboratory Medicine at Royal Jubilee Hospital. Victoria Hospitals Foundation Board Chair Starr McMichael was joined by Dr. Brian Berry, director of hematopathology, Vancouver Island Health Authority, and patient Carl Peterson, who has chronic myelocytic leukemia, to announce the new fundraising campaign and explain the importance of the new machine. This sophisticated medical equipment will benefit almost all patients, and will guide doctors' decisions around diagnosis and ongoing treatment.

Sovereign Order of St. John Donates $187,000 through the Living Spaces project

Today the Victoria Hospitals Foundation announced that more than $187,000 has been raised to assist mentally ill clients in Victoria through the Living Spaces project. To date, 191 mental health clients have been helped since the Sovereign Order of St. John, Victoria Commandery, launched its Living Spaces project in December 2007.

Canadian Tire raises $81,000 through Fix-A-Heart Campaign

About 35 members of the Heart Health team celebrated with the Victoria Hospitals Foundation today during a donor recognition event at Royal Jubilee Hospital to celebrate the success of Canadian Tire’s 2009 Fix-A-Heart campaign. All five local Canadian Tire stores participate in this seasonal month-long give-at-the-till campaign, which has raised more than $380,000 for the Heart Health program since 2003. The 2009 campaign funded diagnostic treadmills for the Echo lab and EDS lab at Royal Jubilee Hospital.

Advanced Solutions contributes $44,000 to Neonatal and Maternity Care

In 2009, Advanced Solutions, an HP company, (formerly EDS Advanced Solutions) raised close to $44,000 for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation through an invitational golf tournament at Royal Colwood Golf Course. The funds will be used to purchase a fetal heart monitor for Victoria General Hospital.

C-FAX Santas Anonymous donates toys to Pediatric Emergency Care

December 21, 2009

C-FAX Santas Anonymous today donated $9,000 worth of toys, plus a $3,000 cash donation for additional needs, to the Child Life unit at Victoria General Hospital. The donations will be used to create Emergency Room Activity Kits for the 5,000 children treated annually at the Emergency Department, with the purpose of providing comfort and a source of distraction for young hospital patients in times of crisis.

Thrifty Foods brings Christmas cheer to Gorge Road Hospital

Patients in Gorge Road Hospital’s complex residential care unit enjoyed a Christmas meal with all the trimmings yesterday, thanks to Thrifty Foods, who generously delivered a donation of food and poinsettias to the facility.

Variety Pediatric Emergency Care Area unveiled

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation was on site at Victoria General Hospital today for the unveiling of the Variety Pediatric Emergency Care Area in the new Emergency Department, thanks to a donation of $278,000 by Variety — the Children’s Charity. Since 1996, Variety has contributed to more than $1 million to improve pediatric care at Victoria General Hospital.

Sony donates $10,000 worth of electronics to Pediatrics

The Sony Canada Charitable Foundation and the Victoria Hospitals Foundation have this week donated $10,000 worth of electronics equipment to the Child Life unit in the Pediatrics department at Victoria General Hospital. The two integrated entertainment centres, which include movies, 32” LCD TVs and Blu-ray Disc™ players, are designed to relieve young patients from the clinical hospital environment.

Burn Unit receives $24,000 from Canada’s top racehorse trainer

December 3, 2009

Jackson Wittup, chair of Standardbred Canada and director of racing at Fraser Downs racetrack, today presented a cheque for $24,000 to Ethel Meyer, manager of the Burn Unit at Royal Jubilee Hospital, and Melanie McKenzie, executive director of the Victoria Hospitals Foundation. The donation is thanks to Canada’s top racehorse trainer, Casie Coleman, who ten years ago spent almost three months in the Burn Unit herself. She credits staff at Royal Jubilee Hospital’s Burn Unit with saving her life.

 

Thrifty Foods gives back

This year Thrifty Foods’ annual Pumpkins for Charity program in October contributed $21,000 to our fall campaign. A big thank-you to everyone at Thrifty Foods and all those people in the community who participated! The funds raised help purchase six new ventilators for the Intensive Care units at Royal Jubilee Hospital and Victoria General Hospital.

Visions 2009 raises $372,000 for Intensive Care

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this year’s Visions gala and helped raise more than $372,000 towards ventilators for the Intensive Care Units at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General Hospitals. The 19th annual sold-out Visions event was held at the Fairmont Empress on Saturday, November 14. Funds were raised through auctions, a raffle, ticket sales, and sponsorship.

Curves Saanich raises close to $6,000 for Breast Health

The Curves Saanich franchise raised close to $6,000 — almost double last year’s total — through their annual October event in support of Victoria General Hospital’s Breast Health program involving a month-long pledge drive and one evening event.
