The intensive care units (ICUs) at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria General Hospital provide care for people with life-threatening conditions. Patients in the ICU may be critically ill or severely injured, and often have lost function in one or more of their vital organs. Both the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria General Hospital have intensive care units for adult patients who likely would not survive without this type of life-saving intervention.
To help these patients recover as best as possible, Intensive Care is provided by a multidisciplinary team composed of specially trained physicians, nurses, and other professionals working with specialized facilities, complex medical equipment, and full monitoring systems to track patients’ condition. Intensive Care is one of the most technologically advanced and resource-intensive areas of hospital care. Patients in the ICU need constant monitoring and evaluation of their responses to treatment.
Being in the ICU or having a relative in the ICU can be an emotionally overwhelming experience. The ICU Care Team also provides support for families of critically ill and injured patients.
