DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES

Diagnostic Services
Diagnostic Services includes Medical Imaging and Laboratory Medicine. These hospital departments are an essential component of patient care. Patients receive various tests in hospital, and the results of these tests guide the doctor’s decisions around diagnosis and ongoing treatment.

The Medical Imaging department provides a wide variety of sophisticated diagnostic tests, including ultrasound, bone densitometry, mammography, MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), nuclear medicine, x-ray, and fluoroscopy. Victoria General Hospital was the first hospital in B.C. to have a 64-slice CT scanner; today both of our hospitals offer services using these sophisticated diagnostic machines.

Between 70% and 80% of all health care decisions affecting diagnosis or treatment are influenced by Laboratory Medicine results. Overall about 3.5 million lab tests are performed annually, including services to hospital wards, renal units, emergency departments, and outpatient units.
