General Medicine is the branch of medicine that focuses on adult care at our hospitals involving the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the internal organs. A general medicine doctor provides care for a patient’s heart, lungs and brain, among other organs. These doctors treat illnesses of the internal organs with methods other than surgery.
Often, they must identify multiple diagnoses, because diseases that involve several internal organs are not uncommon. At Royal Jubilee and Victoria General Hospitals, the General Medicine program also provides care for patients who have infections or chronic health challenges such as diabetes or arthritis which can’t be cured but need care to improve the patient's overall condition.
Services provided through this area of care can be quite broad. For example, the Lung Health program at Royal Jubilee Hospital assists people by providing prevention education, diagnosis, and treatment for conditions including respiratory diseases, asthma, cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis, and sleep apnea (a blockage of the airway during sleep). The General Medicine department provides care on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.
