Neurosciences and Rehabilitation are important areas of patient care, with specialty programs provided at both Victoria General and Royal Jubilee Hospitals.
Victoria General Hospital provides island-wide specialization in Neurosciences, involving treatment of brain and spinal cord injuries. This specialty program at our hospital is dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and injuries of the brain and spinal cord. The neurosurgery division treats patients with epilepsy, brain tumours, spina bifida, Parkinson’s disease, and other disorders. Our hospital’s neurosurgeons also provide support the Emergency Department when someone's brain or spine has been injured in an accident. As well, Victoria General operates the Regional Stroke Program.
Rehabilitation team members work with hospitalized patients to optimize their recovery so they can return home safely and sooner. The Vancouver Island Health Authority has a specialized Inpatient Rehabilitation Program for patients with intense rehabilitation needs — such as resulting from a stroke or head injury, or due to complex issues after an injury, illness, or surgery. Two of Vancouver Island’s three inpatient units with designated adult rehabilitation beds are located in Victoria (the third is in Nanaimo):
- Royal Jubilee Hospital has a 25-bed complex musculo-skeletal rehabilitation unit, which helps people with orthopedic, amputee, medical, and surgical needs
- Victoria General Hospital has a 20-bed neurological rehabilitation unit, which is dedicated to people with issues resulting from a stroke or brain injury
Royal Jubilee Hospital also operates the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic and the Burn Unit. The Burn Unit provides care for patients from all regions of Vancouver Island and is the only such facility on the Island.
