Surgical Services encompasses hospital care involving the operating room. General surgery is performed at both Victoria General and Royal Jubilee Hospitals, which together have 26 operating rooms. Each hospital also provides specialty surgery for patients from across Vancouver Island.
Specialized surgical capabilities between the two hospitals include cardiac, vascular, orthopedic, plastic, pediatric, and trauma surgery as well as urology, neurosurgery, and ophthalmology. More than 30,000 surgical procedures are performed at our hospitals each year — about 90 operations per day.
More than half of all surgeries are now performed as day surgery, which makes support of the daycare surgical wards a priority. The Surgical Services area of care also supports the Pain Clinic at Royal Jubilee Hospital, a unit that assists people with alleviating severe and complex chronic pain.
