Caring Spirit: Dr. Dayna Briemon

Congratulations to Dr. Dayna Briemon of the Emergency Department at Royal Jubilee Hospital on receiving a Caring Spirit award! A grateful patient made a donation in tribute to her after he suffered major problems with his stomach and intestinal system. Thanks to Dr. Briemon and her excellent care, he is now back to swimming every morning. The donor’s generous gift has ultimately helped to purchase eight new Procedural Stretchers for the Royal Jubilee Hospital Emergency Department. Thank you. This cycle of gratitude ensures patients have continued access to the highest quality care.

By replacing old equipment with new mobile stretchers, nurses are now able to quickly and safely move a patient out of the Emergency Department and transport them to another unit should they require care in another area of the hospital. As well, adjustable, moveable stretchers are more ergonomically friendly, so nurses will experience less strain while delivering patient care. Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) is the largest tertiary hospital on Vancouver Island, providing comprehensive hospital and emergency care to all 765,000 residents of Vancouver Island and patients from throughout BC. RJH’s Emergency Department is the Island’s referral center for cardiac, respiratory, renal, vascular and oncology services. It also provides our region’s Psychiatric Emergency Services at the Archie Courtnall Centre for patients arriving in emergency at the Royal Jubilee Hospital with mental health and addiction challenges.

Whether faced with shortness of breath or a severe injury, patients coming to our Emergency Departments need quality care as quickly as possible. Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals operate the busiest emergency rooms on Vancouver Island with approximately 109,000 cases requiring emergency care a year. After triage and initial treatment, about 17% of these patients were admitted for further treatment. The Emergency Department at Royal Jubilee Hospital is a referral center for the Island for cardiac, respiratory, renal, vascular, oncology and psychiatric services. Last year alone, the hospital responded to more than 54,000 cases including 9,128 cardiac cases and 4,589 psychiatric referrals.

Victoria General Hospital’s Emergency Department treated an additional 54,000 people last year. As the pediatric trauma centre for Vancouver Island, Victoria General accommodates the special needs of our smallest patients and their families with a section of the emergency department built with specialized rooms and equipped with the latest pediatric technology. It is also the adult trauma centre for all Vancouver Island, and patients who have major accidents anywhere in the region are transferred by helicopter or ambulance for urgent care.

Our hospitals’ Emergency and Trauma Care units are there for us during times of critical need. Because of the wide range of possible illness and injury, and the potentially life-threatening nature of every case, these units must be equipped to provide initial treatment to every one of these patients, 24 hours a day.

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation would like to thank the Caring Spirit donor for his generous gift and congratulate Dr. Dayna Briemon on the well-earned distinction! Service like hers immeasurably improves quality of life for patients on Vancouver Island.
