Donor-Funded Mural Unveiled at Victoria General Hospital
August 21, 2025 – A new donor-funded mural now graces the front entrance of VGH. Painted by Coast Salish artist Sarah Jim, a member of the WSÁNEĆ Nation, the mural was unveiled in August in a moving ceremony attended by elders, knowledge keepers, Island Health’s Indigenous Health team, caregivers, and donors.
Rich with Indigenous symbolism, the vibrant artwork reflects the land on which the hospital stands, and the people who give and receive care here each day. It serves as a lasting reminder of the profound connection between healing and community, bringing a warmer welcome to everyone who enters VGH. The project is the inspired vision of Dr. Chloé Lemire-Elmore. This mural is an expression of love and a gift to the community.
“VGH is where people seek help in moments of sickness or injury, where more than 2,500 mothers deliver their babies each year and over a thousand people come to work every day. My hope is that the mural conveys the message that we care; that it shows the humanity of our institution, revealing its heart.”
– Dr. Chloe Lemire-Elmore, Medical Director and Chief of Staff, VGH
Dr. Lemire-Elmore made a personal donation in support of the project, and was joined by Accent Inns and our Foundation as equal partners in funding. The dream became a reality with collaboration from STEPS Public Art and the Victoria Arts Council. As part of the unveiling, Sarah Jim, Dr. Lemire-Elmore, CEO of Accent Inns Mandy Farmer, and VHF’s Avery Brohman were honoured in a traditional blanketing ceremony as recognition of their contributions to the community. The ceremony added a deep emotional and spiritual meaning to the day.
“Our work goes beyond new equipment and emerging technologies. Through this special project, the Foundation stands tall with VGH leadership to make the hospital more welcoming and accessible for all patients and caregivers. It is a privilege to be surrounded by leaders like Dr. Lemire-Elmore and Mandy who see a deeper purpose behind projects like these.”
– Avery Brohman, Foundation CEO
