Caring Spirits: Dr. Jacks, Dr. Nelson, and Dr. Chan

Congratulations to Dr. Duncan Jacks (Orthopedics), Charles Nelson (Orthopedics), and Dr. Ken Chan (Anesthesiology) at Victoria General Hospital, recipients of Caring Spirit awards for conscientious patient care! Grateful patients have made significant donations in tribute to their experiences in care. This generosity will directly help improve patient care.

Orthopedic surgery focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention of injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Conditions and diseases treated include fractures, bursitis, sciatica, degenerative joint disease, and cerebral palsy. More than 5,000 orthopedic procedures were performed at Royal Jubilee and Victoria General hospitals last year.

Last year, more than 50,000 surgical procedures were performed at Victoria General and Royal Jubilee hospitals. About 70% of all surgeries are now performed on a daycare basis, improving efficiency and helping our patients get home as soon as possible.

Operating rooms are the hub of Surgical Services. Together, our hospitals have 26 operating rooms equipped for specialized surgical procedures including cardiac, vascular, orthopedic, plastic, pediatric, trauma, urology, neurosurgery, and ophthalmology.

State-of-the-art equipment allow our surgical teams to stay on the leading-edge of a rapidly advancing field. Surgeons use minimally invasive surgical equipment to reduce pain and complications, and help patients recover faster.

Anesthesia is a diversified specialty requiring physicians to draw upon their knowledge of pharmacy and physiology, and to utilize their technical skills in the provision of perioperative care, critical care, emergency care, and pain management.

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation would like to thank the Caring Spirit donors for their generous gifts and congratulate Dr. Duncan Jacks, Dr. Charles Nelson, and Dr. Ken Chan on this well-earned distinction!
