Victoria’s Philanthropy Redefines Surgical Care As Visions Gala Raises Remarkable $3.65 Million

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation proudly announces that its 33rd annual Visions Gala raised a record‑breaking $3.65 million to revolutionize surgery and surgical oncology care at Royal Jubilee Hospital (RJH) and Victoria General Hospital (VGH). The funds raised will empower a new era of advanced oncology treatments and innovative robotic technologies, fundamentally transforming patient care in Victoria and offering the same level of treatment and innovation found in leading healthcare facilities nationwide.

“Victoria continues to punch above its weight: our hospitals are exceptional, our surgeons are at the top of their game, and the innovation we are leading is not happening this quickly anywhere else. At the heart of it all is philanthropy, and the people who believe in better care for their community. For that, we are deeply and personally grateful,” shares Avery Brohman, CEO of the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.

Hosted at the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel, the black‑tie gala brought together more than 640 philanthropists, caregivers, sponsors, and business leaders. Co‑emceed by CHEK News’ Stacy Ross and local Urologist Dr. Iain McAuley, the evening celebrated the power of philanthropy to push boundaries and redefine what is possible for the Island’s hospitals.

Funds raised at the Gala are propelling the Foundation’s $21 million campaign, It’s Time for Surgical Evolution. This bold campaign is driving three innovative transformations: a second da Vinci surgical robot to expand minimally invasive care across gynecologic oncology and pediatric surgery; the Island’s first neurosurgery robot, one of only a few in Canada, to deliver unmatched precision for complex brain and spinal procedures; and 60 precision oncology tools, ensuring access to the same leading‑edge technology found in Canada’s top cancer centres. During the evening, guests had a first-look and interacted with both robotic suites proudly displayed in the room before they make their way to VGH.

The impact builds on the first phase of the campaign and the momentum of last year’s Visions Gala, when donors funded the Island’s first da Vinci robotic surgical system. Patient ambassador Gerald Kersten, recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, was among the first of 300 Islanders to undergo robotic surgery at RJH. On stage, he shared how this breakthrough technology gave him a second chance at life when traditional open surgery was too risky, and in a deeply moving moment honoured his Urologist Dr. Michael Metcalfe with a special tribute.

Local nurse Davita Miles shared a courageous story with deep emotion about her early diagnosis of breast cancer, offering attendees a glimpse into the incredible oncology care she received from her very own colleagues and highlighting what happens when the caregiver becomes the patient themselves. Davita found making clay sculptures of women’s bodies was monumental in her own healing and now offers them to those undergoing cancer treatment themselves.

Together, their stories underscored the powerful message delivered by Neurosurgeon Dr. Daniel Warren and General Surgeon Dr. Heather Emmerton‑Coughlin: that advanced technology, fueled by philanthropy, is profoundly transforming patient outcomes across Vancouver Island.

“Innovative surgical systems and technology help us to provide better care, with better outcomes after cancer surgery,” General Surgeon Dr. Heather Emmerton-Coughlin shared on stage. “Once a cancer is diagnosed, innovation in treatment is equally vital. We’ve made remarkable strides in surgery for many cancers.”

Celebrations showcased the evening, including the most successful pledge drive in Visions Gala history, a moment that demonstrated the extraordinary strength of Victoria’s philanthropic community. The drive was ignited by a remarkable $1 million match donation from philanthropist Craig Mearns, whose generosity set the tone for the evening. His leadership was quickly met by Andrew Sheret Limited, who contributed an extraordinary $500,000 gift, choosing to dedicate their support this year to women’s health.

The Gala was spearheaded by the 2025 volunteer Visions Steering Committee who led the event with remarkable dedication. They were joined by more than 100 volunteers whose collective efforts ensured the event’s success.

Visions is not just a catalyst for change in our Victoria hospitals; it’s a powerful movement that embodies the spirit of philanthropy and community collaboration,” states Charlotte Salomon, KC, Chair of the Visions Steering Committee for the third consecutive year. “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our 33 generous sponsors—local businesses that have rallied behind us—and to the donors and countless volunteers who stand united in this noble cause. Together, we are not just supporting our hospitals; we are investing in the health and future of our entire community. What we are building together is a remarkable gift that benefits us all and I sincerely thank you.”
