Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

An MRI scan helps clinicians determine what’s going on inside a patient’s body. These images — of organs, tissues, and the skeletal system — are so detailed they transform patient care.

MRI scanners create images of soft tissues like muscles, tendons, ligaments, and the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. They assess the thickness of heart walls, aneurysms of cerebral vessels, disorders of the eye and inner ear, blockages of liver and bile ducts, and disk abnormalities in the spine.

Royal Jubilee Hospital recently installed a 3 Tesla (3T) MRI. This new technology improves diagnostic accuracy and reliability for a number of indications, including epilepsy, prostate cancer, breast cancer, and neurological, cerebrovascular, musculoskeletal, cardiac conditions.

Almost 25,000 MRI procedures were performed at our hospitals last year.

Equipment in this area funded by generous donors supporting The Big Picture campaign:

3T MRI (RJH)

A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create images that help diagnose and treat conditions like aneurysms, Multiple Sclerosis, stroke, spinal cord disorders, and tumours.

1 needed @$6,000,000. A portion of this equipment will be funded by donors.

MRI Compatible Patient Monitor (RJH)

This equipment helps patients who require monitoring in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning room. MRI is used for imaging organs, tissues, and skeletal system. Normal patient monitors on the hospital wards are not designed for use in the highly magnetic fields found in the MRI Scanner.

Without MRI compatible monitors, patients who need constant monitoring either cannot be imaged, or must take the risk and be disconnected from monitoring devices in order to scan them.

1 needed @$99,000.

MRI Injector (RJH)

MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) is non-invasive procedure used for imaging organs, tissues, and skeletal system. To better see blood, blood flow, or tissue in certain exams, a contrast agent is injected.

Royal Jubilee Hospital has purchased a new 3T MRI and a compatible injector is needed. 3T MRIs are particularly helpful in creating images of pathological conditions involving the brain, spine, and musculoskeletal system.

Over 2,000 MRI procedures required the use of the injector at Royal Jubilee Hospital last year.

1 needed @$35,000.
