Caring Spirit: VGH Neuro Rehab

Congratulations to the medical and support team at the Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at Victoria General Hospital on receiving a Caring Spirit award! A grateful patient made a donation in tribute to these hard-working staff after his stay in their care: “You are angels, one and all. Please know that who you are and all you do creates hope and possibility for those you serve. May your own lives be blessed in equal measure.” The donor’s generous gift will ultimately help to equip medical and support staff with the very best tools. Thank you. This cycle of gratitude ensures patients have continued access to the highest quality care.

Our Neurosciences and Rehabilitation teams care for people who require brain or spinal treatment, and those who have rehabilitation needs after an illness, injury or surgery. Last year, our neuro and rehab team cared for nearly 2,000 patients who required in-hospital care.

Victoria General Hospital is our Island’s Neurosciences Centre for treatment of brain and spine conditions such as trauma, epilepsy, tumors, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. More than 800 brain and spinal surgeries were performed last year. Because of the intricacy of the brain and spine, sophisticated equipment is required for our neurosurgery team to perform each one with precision.

Having swift attention and rehabilitation after a stroke or brain injury can make all the difference to recovery and quality of life. The Victoria General Hospital operates the Regional Stroke Program and the Stroke Rapid Assessment unit, which responds quickly to patients experiencing a stroke.

After an injury, illness or surgery, a 29-bed Neurological Rehabilitation Unit helps patients reach their highest level of function by preventing complications, reducing disability and improving independence.

Last year, more than 500 patients spent time in Royal Jubilee Hospital’s 25-bed complex Musculo-Skeletal Rehabilitation Unit. Rehabilitation rooms with leading-edge equipment and technology are also found on every floor of the Patient Care Centre. These spaces are equipped to help people safely regain their strength so they can leave the hospital and return to their everyday activities.

Royal Jubilee Hospital also operates the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, which provides care for the special needs of people living with the disease. A team of caregivers provides comprehensive care, including psychiatry, neurological and physical medicine consultation.

The Victoria Hospitals Foundation would like to thank the Caring Spirit donor for his generous gift and congratulate the medical and support team at Neurological Rehabilitation on the well-earned distinction! Service like theirs immeasurably improves quality of life for patients on Vancouver Island.
